JESSICA AUTOMATICALLY put a hand on his chest to steady herself as he brushed his lips across hers, lingering at the corner of her mouth. Then he did this little nibbling thing that further elevated her dangerously high blood pressure.

He’d caught her completely off guard, and for a second she forgot that she was standing out in the open with a potential audience of fifty plus people. He felt wonderfully strong and solid beneath her palm, and she longed to explore further, to slip her fingers between the snaps of his shirt. She already knew she’d find a smooth, well-defined chest and dark tan nipples. Amazing how much detail she still recalled from such a brief glimpse of him this morning.

Ben pulled away first, and she was startled to discover that she’d continued to cling to him long past the point of necessity. He smiled down at her, and then kissed the top of her head before turning back to the blond woman.

“Sorry, Missy, what were you saying?”

“Nothing,” she said with an abrupt lift of one shoulder and a dismissive toss of her head. “Break a leg tomorrow,” she said sweetly, spun on her heel and headed toward a bunch of ranch hands drinking beer at a table near the stage.

“Why not? I’ve broken near everything else.” Ben stared after her, then he muttered nearly inaudibly, “That’s one thing I won’t miss.”

Jessica stepped away a safe distance. “You were rude to her.”

“I’ve tried every polite way I know how to let that young lady know I’m not interested. But she’s pushy and stubborn and a damn—” He cut himself short, looking a bit sheepish. “Let’s just say she’s not much of a lady.”

“So you thought it was okay to use me?”

He took off his hat and drove a hand through his hair, a stricken look on his face. “That wasn’t exactly my intention.”

Regretting her boorishness, she picked up the sack she’d discarded and started jamming in the empty cans. “You can’t just kiss someone like that for no reason.”

“Well, hell, it’s not like I haven’t wanted to kiss you all day.” He set the hat back on his head and pulled the rim low. “And don’t act like you didn’t know it.”

She glanced over her shoulder to make sure no one was listening. Fortunately, the older man sharing the booth had gone again.

“Or didn’t want it,” Ben added, his voice husky.

He was right, of course, but she didn’t appreciate him pointing it out. She held his gaze. “Don’t you have enough groupies following you around to pump up your ego? Do you really need to taunt me?”

“Yep, I do.”

She laughed at his unexpected response. “Well, stop it.”

Sighing, he took her hand. “I like you, Philly. And I like that you don’t care which rodeo I’ve won or want to know which one I’m riding in next.”

What Kate had confided earlier came to mind, and curiosity almost got the better of Jessica. But she sensed that was a subject he wouldn’t welcome her broaching.
